The Situation Just Jumped Six Figures

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Those of you who think that reality TV is a poor way to get you to fame and fortune shouldn’t have a conversation with Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino from MTV’s Jersey Shore. The more he flashes his cheeseball smaile and his abs like a trained seal, the more money’s thrown at him.

This time “The Sit” has locked down a six-figure endorsement deal with a new line of tuxedos. So it appears that if you want to look like “The Situation,” you need a tux to rent for those formal affairs. Far be it from ChivCulture.com to throw stones at a man making a living off his personality, we are just a little surprised that it has lasted this long.

The Goodbye to Potter

Friday, August 12th, 2011

It’s the end of an era and we here at ChivCulture.com want to pay homage to the Harry Potter series. Whether wizards and fantastical tales are for you or not, you have to give props where they are due. J. K. Rowling took her extraordinary vision and turned herself into one of the biggest rags to riches stories of all time. Never forget, she didn’t even own a computer while writing the first book.

Now we bid a fond farewell to Harry, seven books, eight movies, and an online game later. There is nothing cooler than when a truly gifted artist has the guts to stay true to a vision and won’t compromise. And anything that captivates millions has to be remarkable.

Is Trevor Donovan The Next Plastic Idol?

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Trevor Donovan of 90210 fame is looking to tackle an icon. We here at ChivCulture.com love when a young actor gets the chance to move up in the ranks. That’s why we were elated to hear that he’s in the running as the lead in the upcoming Barbie movie as, yes you guessed it, Ken.

Now, playing the part of an anatomically incorrect plastic man doesn’t sound like the juicy role that gets you out of your bed in the morning, then again, neither does starring on a rehash of a team drama popular 20 years ago. Still, make no mistake. When the cash starts rolling in from what should be a money maker, we’ll all be watching as Trevor Donovan gets the last laugh.

Child with toy hand grenade street art

Image by Max Eremine via Flickr

Street art is a popular way for people to express their individuality in a world that can seem so conformist. This is especially true for the youth. Art lets people say what perhaps they don’t feel able to say in words or at least in normal speech. Street art takes many forms, from chalk on the sidewalk to graffiti to murals and even to music. Like any art, the public’s reaction to the art has to be considered, especially since street art isn’t always legal.

Drawings on the sidewalk: not just for little children. A sidewalk is like an infinite canvas – there’s always more sidewalk, and since everyone’s running around with their heads down, they’ll see the art!

Graffiti means leaving some kind of mark on public/private property. This usually takes the form of spray-paint, but not always. If you have a visual signature and leave it somewhere, that’s known as “tagging.” Graffiti is popular among gangs claiming territory and also among rebellious youth. Graffiti is illegal (you’re marking up something that doesn’t belong to you), so it’s not the best way to express yourself, but it’s certainly one way some people shout out to the world.

Murals are large-scale paintings on vertical surfaces like walls and fences. They can be a great addition to the community, but without prior permission they are as illegal as graffiti, so take care. If you express yourself musically and like to play on the street, that’s art, too. Whatever your mode of expression, everyone wants to be heard.
